Meet the Conductors

Kendall Johnson is a graduate student at Truman State University, pursuing a Master’s of Arts degree in Conducting, as well as a Master’s of Arts degree in Education. Johnson completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music at Truman State University, where she studied as a clarinetist under Dr. Jesse Krebs. As a member of Dr. Jesse Krebs’ clarinet studio, she has been a part of the Wind Symphony 1 & 2, Truman Clarinet Choir, University Orchestra, and Woodwind Choir at Truman State University. Johnson also served as the director of the Woodwind Choir at Truman State University in 2018 and 2019.
In the summer of 2017, Johnson worked at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI, performing with the festival’s top ensembles and working with both high school and middle school students. In 2018, she spent five weeks touring Europe while playing in the Blue Lake International Band. As a Truman student, she has also volunteered at events such as the American Single Reed Summit and the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference. Before college, she was also a member of the Northwest Missouri All-District Honor Band, Missouri All-State Band, Four-State Honor Band, and Youth Symphony of Kansas City.

Chris Ramey is in his final semester of the Masters of Arts in Conducting program at Truman State University, having the pleasure to study instrumental conducting under Dr. Curran Prendergast. During his Graduate Teaching/Research Assistantship, Mr. Ramey has directed Truman State University’s Concert Band, written drill for the Statesmen Marching Band, conducted Wind Symphony I and II, and has presented research at the Student Research Conference. In the spring of 2021, Mr. Ramey will complete his Masters of Arts in Education and pursue a career in music education. 


Mr. Ramey received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Minor in Jazz Studies from Truman State University in the fall of 2018. During his undergraduate studies, Mr. Ramey studied saxophone under Dr. Xin Gao and Dr. Randall Smith. He has performed with the Truman State University Wind Symphony I and II, Orchestra, Woodwind Choir, Saxophone Ensemble, Uncommon Practice, and Jazz Combo. 


Mr. Ramey has been involved in the marching arts for ten years. He was a member of La Crosse, Wisconsin’s Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps (2014 - 2017), and was on the brass and visual staff for the 2018 season. In 2019, Mr. Ramey served on the visual staff of Dubuque, Iowa’s Colts Drum and Bugle Corps, and on the design and instructional staff for Amethyst Independent Winterguard. This past summer, he served on the instructional staff for the Grain Valley High School Marching Eagles in Grain Valley, Missouri, and for the Rockwood Summit High School Silver Falcon Marching Band in Fenton, Missouri. 


Mr. Ramey is a proud alum of the Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and a member of the National Association for Music Education

Michael Rucker, Jr. is a student in the Master of Arts in Education and Conducting programs at Truman State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Truman in May of 2019. Originally from Florissant, Missouri, he has studied saxophone under the direction of Dr. Xin Gao and Dr. Randall Smith, composition under Dr. Victor Marquez-Barrios, and conducting under Dr. Curran Prendergast.
Michael is also very visible on campus when not in class. He has participated in various organizations and ensembles offered on the Truman campus.  While being a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant, he also served as the President of the Truman State University Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education, a member of Uncommon Practice (Truman’s contemporary music ensemble), member of several chamber ensembles, and an alum of the Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Curran Prendergast is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Truman State University where he guides all aspects of the band and graduate instrumental conducting programs. He conducts Wind Symphony I and II, directs the Statemen Marching Band, and teaches undergraduate and graduate music education and conducting courses.
A native of Iowa, Dr. Prendergast received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Central College (IA). He subsequently taught in the public schools for seven years in Indiana and Minnesota. Prendergast also served on staff with the Dubuque Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. Dr. Prendergast holds a Master of Arts in Band Conducting from the University of Iowa and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Georgia. His conducting teachers include Dr. Shelley Axelson, Dr. Richard Mark Heidel, and Dr. John Lynch.
As an advocate for new wind band music, Prendergast is regularly involved in commissioning new works for band and connecting his students with living composers including John Hennecken, Michael Ippolito, John Leszcynski, Timothy Mahr, Victor Marquez, and Jess Turner. Other research interests include the impact of preplanned versus spontaneous conducting gesture on ensemble performance and developing innovative teaching and programming strategies for music educators.
Prendergast has appeared as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, Canada, Russia, and Switzerland. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, College Music Society, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi.
